RuPaul Charles dropped byThe late pretense afterward Stephen Colbert upon Wednesday night to plate out thoughts on Mondays Met Gala. The theme of the concern was camp, a concept codified in Susan Sontags 1964 essay Notes upon Camp and popularized by drag queens and LGBTQ media, including of course RuPauls Drag Race.
With camp, you have to be practiced to see the facade of life, the absurdity of life, from outdoor of yourself, said Ru to Colbert and his audience. So the idea of drag is camp because were saying, Im not this body. Im actually God in drag playing humanity.'
Ru explained that drag and camp are all not quite not taking activity too seriously. Colbert then held in the works a photo of Celine Dions pasta-like Met Gala dress and asked if it was camp.
Its borderline camp, said Ru, because Celine Dion is wacky crazy, and I love her, and shes campy because she gets the joke. Shes in on the joke.
